Welcome to the Hartley Morris Men's website. Here you will find information about who we are, what we do and were we do it. There are pages for our guests giving details of our special events and a contact form if you want to know more or to book us for your event.
The Hartley Morris Men were formed in 1952 by former members of the Stansted Morris Men who had danced in the area from 1934 until the outbreak of war. Making us the oldest Morris side based in the West Kent area. We perform the ancient and traditional Morris dances of the Cotswold style. Our colours of Red, White and Blue were chosen to commemorate the Queen's accession to the throne in that year.
Initially, the Hartley Morris Men were based in the village of their name until 1970 when we moved our ‘headquarters’ to a popular folk club venue in Farningham. During 1978 we decided that Wrotham was more central to our activities and the village has been our adopted home ever since. At present we do not have any members who are residents of the village but every Thursday evening from September to April we meet in the Rose & Crown and practice in St Georges hall.
Our performing season runs each year from May until September and usually starts with a spectacular May Day morning performance at dawn at the Coldrum Stones Long Barrow.
During the summer season the side maintains a long standing tradition of dancing at pubs throughout West Kent. Bringing back live folk entertainment to large numbers of people within the community and providing the men themselves with the opportunity to enjoy good ale!
We inevitably end the formal season at our spiritual home, the Rose and Crown, Wrotham, where this painting of us dancing in front of the church is displayed. It was commissioned by the brewery, Shepherd Neame, in recognition of our long association with the pub and the village.
In addition to the dancing and singing, over the Christmas period, traditional mumming plays are performed by The Darent Valley Champions in aid of local charities.
We practise in St George’s Hall Wrotham on Thursday evenings throughout the winter (In case you wondered). If any men fancy joining us, rather than just watching us, just come along. You can contact us by phoning +44(0)1622 685960, or
